About Chapel
My name is Chapel Rice. I grew up and live in the Columbia, South Carolina area. I am serious about my faith, family, and making money, and generally unserious about everything else. I created this site primarily to share some tools and content that I have developed. I hope that they can help you set and reach some worthy goals.
Professionally, I do FP&A (Financial Planning and Analysis) for a Family Office called i3 out of Lexington, SC. The path I took to get to my current role, which I really enjoy, has been interesting and fun!
I went to the University of Tennessee to study Aerospace Engineering and Applied Mathematics. While at UT, I gained some great experiences in summer jobs and undergraduate research. I worked in an Aerospace and Industrial cabling plant in St. Matthews, SC, installed Telecom Equipment from Arkansas up to Vermont, worked for the Naval Information Warefare Center (NIWC), and researched Inverse Heat Transfer with Dr. Jay Frankel. These experiences pushed me away from engineering towards software and data, and along the way I picked up a major interest in investing and an appreciation for open source software.
UT had a golden program to get an MBA and MS in Engineering in two years. I went through this program where I picked up more interesting experiences, studying Optimization and Control Theory with Dr. Zhenbo Wang, being the teaching assistant for finance classes that I had never taken, and being the professor for a course for Measurement and Instrumentation. I wrote a master's thesis about Flight Control and Path Planning in the context of using drones to pollinate due to the decline of Bee Populations. During this time, I took to finance and learned about the CFA program (Chartered Financial Analyst). The CFA is a globally recognized professional certification for investment management. I took and passed the CFA Level I at the end of grad school.
Finishing my Graduate school, I took a job with Capgemini as a software consultant. I worked primarily with Azure Cloud Infrastructure and Azure Devops Pipelines. After 10 months, I ran into a good friend of mine who had a job opening with Stanley Martin homes in Corporate Finance, FP&A. I took this job, helping the Stanley Martin Aiken-Augusta and Charleston divisions for two years with reporting, underwriting, and business planning. I picked up great experience through Stanley Martin that have allowed me to do well with my current role at i3 Resources. While at Capgemini and Stanley Martin, I took the CFA Level II and III. I got my real estate license while working at Stanley Martin.
